Everest Base Camp Trek

The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of our most popular walks and this superb itinerary has been developed to get the most of our time in the mountains. Our principal objective is to trek to Everest Base Camp, and then to make an adventurous day hike up the Khumbu Glacier to the Base Camp itself. We fly into the mountain airstrip at Lukla and trek north along the banks of the Dudh Kosi River. All along the route, colorful prayer flags, chortens and mani stones dot the landscape, and as a backdrop we have some of the most famous peaks in the Himalaya. Thamserku, Kang Tega and Kusum Kangru are all visible on our first full day of walking, at the end of which, we arrive at the Sherpa capital, the Namche Bazaar. From here on, our itinerary is structured to allow as much time as possible for acclimatization, and we will spend the next few days gaining height very gradually. Rest days are built into the programme at Namche and Pheriche to give everyone the opportunity to properly adjust to the higher altitudes. Peaks including Ama Dablam, Nuptse and Lhotse line our route, and as we continue to ascend through the small settlements at Lobuche and Gorak Shep, the scenery becomes even more impressive, with Pumori, Lingtren and Changtse all becoming visible.
This region is famous not only for its proximity to the world’s highest mountain but also for its Sherpa villages and monasteries with their virtually unchanged unique culture. Solu has received countless trekkers and mountaineers from all over the world. Solukhumbu has developed to a stage where many options are possible from a full-scale expedition with tents and porters to an independent trek using the local lodges. Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976, covers much of this region. This fascinating land surrounded by high mountains is a real paradise for mountaineers & trekkers.

Itinerary Detail of Everest Base Camp Trek

  • Day 01 : Mountain Flight to Lukla and Begin Trek to Phakding.
Transfer to the airport for the mountain flight to Lukla. During the short but spectacular flight we will leave the Kathmandu Valley and head into the Himalaya, the world’s highest mountains rising before us. Our destination is Lukla, perched high on a mountainside above the Dudh Kosi (River of Milk), where we make an unforgettable landing on its 1,729-foot-long, 65-foot-wide runway. From Lukla, the trail descends 1,500 feet down to the Dudh Kosi river for further trek to Phakding village.
  • Day 02 : Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
The trail climbs up the Dudh Koshi Canyon, crossing from side to side the villages. Trekkers must register at Jorsale for the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park just beyond to Chomou. The trail undulates along the valley up to the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi. Climb up to Namche Bazaar for overnight.
  • Day 03 : Namche Bazaar
A rest day should be spend relaxing in Namche Bazaar for acclimatization. There are a number of local excursions that we might enjoy. Hike up above Namche to the Sagarmatha National Park Visitor’s Center and Museum, where there are terrific views of the Everest region and numerous educational displays on the culture, geography, geology, climatology, and wildlife within the park and the Khumbu. It is also possible to make a 2-2½ hour hike up to Syangboche and the Everest View Hotel
  • Day 04 : Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
From Namche Bazaar, it is a steep one hour climb to Shyangboche. There are good view of Ama Dablan and Everest from here. The trail to Tengboche from Khunjung goes down the valley, past chortens and amni walls and soon meets the direct Namche Bazaar to Tengboche trail.
  • Day 05 : Trek from Tengboche to Pheriche
Descend through forest to Devuche on the way to Everest Base Camp. From Pangboche, the trail initially remains faily steady above the Imja Khola. Trek to the Pheriche village for overnight which consists mainly of hotels and teashops plus a shop selling expedition leftovers.
  • Day 06 : Pheriche
Spend a trest day here, even if you are feeling in a good condition. A side trip can be made up to Nagkartshand Gompa which also offers a good view of Makalu. There is another, most strenuous, side to Chhukung, a small summer settlement where you get exvellent views of Island Peak, Lhotse and Ama Dablam.
  • Day 07 : Trek from Pheriche to Lobuche
The first part of the route passes up to the long scrubby flat bottom of the valley to Phulung Kharka. It rises steadily, then drops down, crosses the river and enters Dughla. From here the trail climbs higher, then follow the small valley to Lobuche for overnight. The views of Taweche and Nuptse are spectacular.
  • Day 08 : Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep
Continue up to the grassy valley beside the Khumbu Glacier moraine until the terminal moraine of the Changri Nup and Changri Shar. It then becomes steeper and rougher as you climb to top of the moraine. Then it is a short descent to the dry sandy area of Gorak Shep which has a small lake beyond.
  • Day 09 : Trek from Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp
Everest Base Camp is to the east of the Khumbu Glacier. After leaving the head of the lake at Gorak Shep, you climb through a boulder strewn area. The trail then crosses the moraine wall and descends to the Khumbu Glacier which you cross. Take great care. The Base Camp is at 5,400 metres. The round trip from Gorak Shep takes over six hours.
  • Day 10 - 12 : Return to Namche Bazaar and Lukla
Allow three or four days for the return. You will probably be pleasantly surprise that as you descend you feel great rushes of energy. From Namche Bazaar to Lukla, you retrace your steps as far as Chablung then turn off above Chauri Kharka towards Lukla.
